Chateau Montelena, located in Calistoga in Napa Valley, is one of California’s most historic wineries, famous for putting Napa on the international map after its Chardonnay triumphed at the 1976 Judgment of Paris. The estate has a long tradition of producing Cabernet Sauvignon that balances power and elegance, with remarkable ageing potential. The 2019 vintage benefited from a warm, steady growing season, producing grapes with concentrated flavours, firm structure, and vibrant freshness.

The vineyards are planted on volcanic and well-draining alluvial soils, which stress the vines just enough to yield deeply concentrated fruit. Grapes were hand-harvested and fermented in small open-top fermenters, followed by extended ageing in French oak barrels to develop complexity, integrate tannins, and add subtle spice and vanilla notes.

Appearance Deep, dark ruby with garnet edges, reflecting the wine’s full-bodied nature. The wine has a clear, luminous core with slow-moving, well-defined legs, signalling excellent concentration and structure.

Aroma A complex bouquet of blackberry, cassis, and ripe black cherry opens the nose, intertwined with subtle notes of graphite, cedar, and sweet tobacco. Hints of mocha, vanilla, and dried herbs emerge with aeration, adding layers of sophistication.

Taste The palate is rich and structured, showing concentrated dark fruit, layered with cassis, blackcurrant, and hints of cocoa. The tannins are firm yet polished, providing backbone without overpowering the wine’s balance. Mid-palate nuances of spice, cedar, and subtle earthy notes enhance depth and complexity.

Finish Long and elegant, with lingering black fruit, fine tannins, and a touch of mineral and spice. The finish reflects the wine’s balance, elegance, and capacity to age gracefully over the next decade or more.
